The last few weeks have passed amazingly quickly. There are so many things that happen or need to happen during the transition time. We've had some great success finding a new place in Charlottesville to live, and also selling our current house. Changing addresses alone is a major undertaking, we forget how many things are tied to our home address. But add in the mix a couple career changes and now you're really having fun.
Finding a new place to live was simple in theory. We knew we wanted to live close to school and in a place that wasn't falling apart. In retrospect, looking for home close to campus that are in good condition is pretty limiting. If the house was occupied by undergrads at any point it is forever scarred in some way, or if not it probably costs $500K+. Given our criteria we quickly narrowed the selection down to three houses and picked one in a weekend. Our new house is less than two miles from campus and is remarkably intact.
We will move into the new place in July, giving us a full month to get settled in. Having the move scheduled in advance actually helps in several ways:
- Not starting classes with a sore back - I'd hate to be moving in the night before classes
- Financial Aid - a little known fact is that houses aren't counted as liquid assets for tuition purposes
- Mountain time - most people visit the mountains for vacation, we get to live there.
The next few weeks will give me the opportunity to develop my handyman skills. There are plenty of opportunities to paint, sand and repair that I'm looking forward too. This will also be a great chance to enjoy my last couple months of free time before things get busy in the fall.
