One of the first cases we read at Darden was about the EarthLight, a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). As one of the fist products on the market of its type, the business challenge was how to market this product against cheaper incandescent bulbs. Not coincidentally I recently watched An Inconvenient Truth. One nice thing about energy saving changes is that they are also money saving. It's not too tough to justify these ideas whether you're a tree-hugger or a money-hugger. Sadly, most people can't justify a five-dollar light bulb over a 50-cent bulb. That's like 10x right?
Right. But what about the $1 per month in energy savings? We tend not o consider the total costs of our purchases. This is the challenge of businesses and individuals, to re-frame the purchase decision. Paper or plastic? Neither. As it turns out, cloth bags are the answer. Did you know many stores give a discount for each cloth bag you use? Ask.
