I've just finished a weekend in Minneapolis at what's known as a "sell day." I've accepted a position at Target headquarters as a finance intern. The sell day was an opportunity for us to have sessions with staff at various levels of responsibility and to mingle with other potential candidates. Other candidates represented school including Yale, Harvard, Kellogg and UNC. It was also an opportunity for me to compare programs for the first time. It was interesting to hear that some seemingly minor differences can make significant differences. A class of 90 instead of 65 can mean that getting involved in class participation is more challenging HBS. Study groups that are not assigned means that there is a lot of jockeying for position (Ross). It occurredto me that Darden and other schools make very decisions about these processes that have big cultural impact.
I'm excited to make the temporary move to Minneapolis. The city is full of nightlife and activity. The culture of Target is young and energetic. Part of our company tour included a store tour of the local downtown Target retail store which serves as a prototype for new strategies. We wondered what the pressure is like to manage a retail outlet only steps away for the office.
